Island Plate Lunch: Kudanshita- bento.com listing

If you have a craving for a Hawaiian plate lunch and you happen to be in the Kudanshita/Iidabashi area, Island Plate Lunch should be on your radar. The kitchen turns out credible versions of traditional favorites like Lemon Butter Shrimp, Loco Moco, Poke, Ahi Steak, Honey Chicken, and Spam Egg. There are thirteen main items to choose from, as well as “surf and turf” combo plates featuring two main dishes.

Each plate comes with rice (white, brown or wakame-gohan), macaroni salad and steamed broccoli. Plates are typically priced at Y790 for an “S” size and Y1,490 for an “F” size, which we were told is 70% bigger than the “S” size. Most items are also served a la carte, in case you want to put together a more varied dinnertime spread. Malasada (Portuguese-style fried doughnuts) make a nice mid-afternoon snack, and drinks include Kona beer, Hawaiian Sun fruit sodas, coffee and juice.

A recent combo plate of Mochiko Chicken and Garlic Shrimp really hit the spot. Plump, juicy shrimp were drenched in an assertive garlic sauce, while tender chunks of well-seasoned chicken were complemented by the pleasantly chewy dollop of brown rice.

The dining area here is long and narrow, with a glass wall on one side, more like a mid-range hotel coffee shop than a fast-food restaurant. There’s also a tiny outdoor patio with one table for four. Although it might not be destination dining, it’s nice enough for a quick dinner or a mid-afternoon meal if you’re in the area. They also do take-out and delivery. The restaurant is located midway between Kudanshita and Iidabashi stations – about a five-minute walk from either.
