Panko: A Pantry Staple

Panko
Panko Panko is a type of Japanese bread crumb that is made from crustless bread. This produces flakes that are larger than standard breadcrumbs while still remaining light and very crisp. These flakes are more resistant to soaking in oil when frying than standard breadcrumbs. In Japanese cuisine, panko is used as a crunchy coating for fried meat cutlets. Most varieties of panko are also vegan. Gluten-free versions are also available.
What to Look For This ultra light breadcrumb is so popular in mainstream cuisine, that you should have no trouble finding it on the shelves of your local grocery store. Look for plain, unseasoned panko to get the most bang for your buck. While seasoned varieties such as lemon pepper and Italian offer a quick fix, out of the box solution, these flavors often clash with flavors in Asian cuisine recipes.
How to Use Panko can be a superstar in the kitchen. It can be substituted for regular breadcrumbs. Using it as a coating for frying items is a given. However, panko can also be using in baking. Use it instead of graham cracker crumbs when you you want a less sweet version of a cookie or pie crust. It can also be used to make a crisp topping. Toss it with butter or margarine to use as a crispy topping for casseroles.
