The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Japanese Food
One of the most astonishing features of sushi’s very lengthy history is the fact that it is ever evolving. Developed in China as a means of preserving food, sushi was originally documented there in the second century. Putting fish in rice and letting it ferment made it last for a very long time as food. Eventually, the rice was thrown away, and the fish was eaten only when absolutely necessary.
The custom spread across China and eventually made its way to Japan in the seventh century, where seafood has long been a staple meal. The Japanese made a little adjustment by choosing to eat the rice with the fish instead of on the side. By the 17th century, rice had been seasoned, turning what had been a curative practice into a well loved delicacy. Many people believe that Matsumoto Yoshi hiro of Edo (now Tokyo) invented modern sushi by mass producing sushi rolls.
NEW AGE SUSHI
Early in the nineteenth century, a man named Hanaya Yohei had a vision for revolutionizing the sushi industry. He didn’t use the traditional method of wrapping the fish in rice; instead, he placed the fish on top of an oblong of seasoned rice and wrapped the whole thing up. This preparation method has contributed to the widespread use of the terms “nigiri sushi” and “edomae sushi” to describe one of the most common ways sushi is eaten not just in Japan but all around the world.
These creative new sushi rolls were promoted by Anaya Yoshie and other sushi chefs at street booths all around the city and its environs. After World War II, the stalls were forced to close and relocate indoors because of health concerns, despite having been hugely popular with the busy Japanese culture before the war.
THIS IS A GLOBAL TREND.
An rising number of sushi restaurants popped up in the late 1970s to serve the growing number of Japanese businesspeople based in the region. Even though it was originally meant as a quick snack, it quickly expanded into a full-fledged dining experience for those unfamiliar with the idea and came to be known as a “Japanese take on fast food.”
Sushi had undeniably grabbed the interest of many Americans, but many were still reluctant to try it due to health concerns about eating raw fish. The California Roll was created to ease the way into sushi for those who had never had it before; it is often considered to be the perfect first sushi dish. Edo-style sushi began to blend with western culture as more and more Westerners began to enjoy sushi.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! WHAT CAN WE EXPECT THIS YEAR?
Sushi, for the purposes of this article, is understood to be any dish built on sushi rice that has been seasoned with vinegar. Most people think that because sushi is called “sushi,” it must be made with raw fish. Sushi, a Japanese dish made with vinegared rice, gets its name from the direct translation of the term for “it’s sour” in Japanese. Besides, there are fish-free sushi options like our Vegetarian Roll, which is loaded with poached asparagus, cucumber, caramelized miso wild mushrooms, and burdock root, topped with avocado, and seasoned with sweet black miso aioli.
There is a great deal of variation in sushi styles and ingredients available in Australia and elsewhere throughout the world.
