Meatballs Doria – Hiroko’s Recipes

‘Doria’, a Japanese dish of Rice, is very versatile. The basic Doria can be made with Butter Rice OR Pilaff covered with White Sauce (Béchamel Sauce) and grated Cheese, and baked in the oven. You can season the Rice as you like, and add Vegetables, Meat, Chicken, Seafood, etc. Today I added store-bought Meatballs for quick and easy dish. I seasoned Rice with Salt & Pepper, but Tomato flavour OR Curry flavour are very nice.

Makes

4 Servings

Ingredients

500g Meatballs
4 servings Cooked Rice
1 tablespoon Butter OR Oil *plus extra to grease the baking dish
1 Onion *finely chopped
1 clove Garlic *finely chopped
1/2 cup Peas
1/2 cup Corn Kernels
Salt & Pepper
*Note: You may wish to season the Rice differently. You can add Tomato Paste OR Tomato Pasta Sauce, OR add your favourite Spices and Herbs. I sometimes add Curry Powder.
1 cup shredded Tasty Cheese (Cheddar) *OR Cheese of your choice

White Sauce
40g Butter
1/4 cup Plain Flour
2 cups Milk
Salt & Pepper
*Note: White Sauce can be cooked in the microwave and it is very easy. See ‘Super Easy White Sauce’ page.

Method

Cook Meatballs In a frying pan OR according to the instructions on the package if you use store-bought Meatballs.

Preheat oven to 200℃.

Heat Butter (OR Oil) in a frying pan, cook finely chopped Onion and Garlic until soft, add Peas and Corn Kernels, add cooked Rice, mix to combine, and season with Salt & Pepper (and add Tomato Paste, Spices OR Herbs).

To make White Sauce, heat Butter in a saucepan over medium heat until melted and foaming, add Flour and cook stirring until mixture bubbles. Slowly add Milk, stirring constantly until sauce boils and thickens. Season with Salt & Pepper.

*Note: White Sauce can be cooked in the microwave, and it is much easier. See ‘Super Easy White Sauce’ page.

Lightly Butter OR Oil a large ovenproof dish, spread the Rice mixture, arrange Meatballs on top, pour the White Sauce over, and cover with grated Cheese. Bake for 20 minutes OR until golden.
